We learn that on Friday week, two men were lodged in Poughkeepsie jail, charged with the murder of Miss Hamilton, of Athens, the particulars of which horrid murder has been lately published in this Gazette. One of these men was dressed as a sailor, and the other in a common country dress. It appears that they hid from boat at Hyde Park, about five miles from Poughkeepsie, and took up their lodgings at a tavern. They lodged in a room where two other men slept, and during the night entered into a conversation on the subject of the murder of Miss Hamilton: from which conversation it is evident they were the guilty persons. They mentioned the scuffle they had with the deceased, and that their intention was to violate her person—but finding she made so much resistance, they determined to take her life, and throw her body into the creek. One of them said that she had severely bit his arm. The two persons who overheard this conversation, immediately took measures to have the men apprehended: and they were lodged in jail as above stated. On their examination before a magistrate they denied the charge: but on being ordered to expose their arms, a wound supposed from a bite, was discovered on one of them which, he said he had received in a scuffle with a woman of ill fame.
