HOPE.
Hope cheers the wanderer on his way
With thoughts of distant pleasures dear;
It sheds a mild and joyous ray
O'er prospects dark and drear.
When tossed on life's tempestuous sea
When high and angry billows roll,
Hope lends a charm to make the spirit free,
To spread its influence o'er the soul
Hope makes the darkest clouds depart:
When fell despondence sad and drear,
Throws gloomy shades upon the heart
Then hope's bright beam dispels our fear.
It lulls the wearied soul to rest,
And yields the mind supreme delight;
It gives to our enjoyments zest,
Our night of sorrow turns to light.
Blest hope of happiness! I prize
The precious boon from heaven lent;
The bow of promise from the skies-
To us in mercy was it bent.
O may thine influence ever cheer
Me through life's rugged way;
Thy hallowed charm be ever near-
Thy pure and blissful ray
