London, May 13.—The director general of stores is now in South Staffordshire visiting the principal iron works with the view of ascertaining their capacity for producing chain and cable iron plates and other descriptions of iron in connection with the requirements of the government for national defenses. Owing to the steel works being engaged up to their full capabilities, it is found necessary to use finished iron for purposes for which steel was formerly used. The government
