The Great Battle in Southern Europe.
When Garibaldi entered Naples, the King did not flee the country, but retired to the city of Capua, some twenty miles from Naples, where his army, 40,000 strong, was intrenched in an almost impregnable position. Of course there could be no permanent peace in Naples until the King leaves the country and his army subdued or broken up. It appears that Garibaldi has been concentrating his forces around Capua. Several slight skirmishes have occurred, but nothing until the first of October, when the Neapolitan army, 30,000 strong, made an attack on Garibaldi's troops. The attack was so sudden and unexpected, that the Garibaldians yielded to the shock, and would have been defeated had not Garibaldi, revolver in hand, rushed forward and encouraged his fainting men. The battle was then renewed and the Garibaldians finally gained a great victory, but Garibaldi's losses have been so severe that he has called upon Victor Emanuel to come to Naples immediately at the head of a division of the Sardinian army. The King of Naples and his brother were present at the battle. The Garibaldians had only 15,000 troops to meet the 30,000 Neapolitans. The armed intervention of the King of Sardinia will render Austria exceedingly sore, for heretofore Victor Emanuel has kept himself clear of a direct interference in Naples. One more battle will decide the fate of the King of Naples. Capua must be taken before the struggle can be considered terminated. With the assistance of the brave army of Sardinia, there seems little doubt of the result. Recent events have shown that the alleged misunderstanding between Victor Emanuel and Garibaldi is a hoax. They are necessary to each other and to the cause of Italian unity and independence, and what is more, they know it. By acting in concert the brave King and great Commoner can wield the whole power of Italy for the regeneration of their country, and we trust that harmony may continue, as Italy is now undergoing a great revolution, yea we may say greater, than the change in the American Colonies, when they threw off the British yoke. She will obtain not merely political liberty, but that religious liberty which more truly exists in Sardinia than in any other country in Catholic Europe.
