There are now here ten French Indians from Oswegatche, who are come in the Name of their Nation to make a Peace with the Six Nations and us. Some of them that are here now, were at the Battle of Quebec the 28th of April: They say they never saw Fighting till that Day: that indeed the French are great Warriors, but the English much greater, as they fought so well, and had so few Men; they asked whether our Regiment (meaning the Highlanders) were there, as they said they saw such at the Battle, and that they killed many Frenchmen with their long Knives (meaning their Broad-swords). These Indians would readily join us, were they not afraid the French would destroy their Squaws and Children: but promise to join General Amherst with 60 Warriors in going down the River: They make no Secret of the Cause of their leaving the French, as they plainly see the English will take their Country from them.
