And Is Blown Up
Man Consumes Large Quantity of Poison and After Death Explosion Takes Place in Corpse.
Raven, Va., Feb. 12.—(Correspondent.) News reached here early part of the week of the death of Charlie Hammel in a hospital in Harlan, Ky. He was the son of a widely known contractor throughout the Southwest Virginia and Eastern Ky. The nature of the young man's death is uncommon, being attributed to drinking of canned heat. Hammel accompanied by another man, purchased 48 tins of canned heat and going to an old shack drank the majority of the canned heat. Hammel, having lost both arms during the past two years drank his portion, while his companion held the tins to his lips. His father found him 48 hours later in the shack near death, rushing him to the hospital were he died within a few minutes, and only a few seconds after death the heat exploded with a loud report, tearing the mans mouth, nose and ears open. Two years ago while under the influence of whiskey, Hammel wrecked a truck cutting off his right arm. Last fall his left arm became paralyzed after drinking Jamaica ginger and an infection necessitated the amputation of the other arm, then death by canned heat.
