IMMIGRANTS EAGER TO REACH U. S. BUT ARE SLOW TO LEARN ENGLISH
NEW YORK Nov. 23. (AP)-America may be the melting pot of the peoples of the world at least in adoption of our language the Americanization process is slow.
It can be gauged by the one million persons who read for foreign language newspapers in New York.
When the immigrant station at Ellis Island, where the melting pot first is to boil, there are published to daily newspapers in twenty-three different tongues. Their combined circulation indicates that one of every five New Yorkers reads a newspaper in a foreign language.
With of three persons in New York according to the latest estimate seven Jewish dailies not more than half the foreign press content in every issue.
And in the heart of the teeming lower east side is reared a golden nightly sunshine Hebrew, half American-the sign of the Jewish Daily Forward.
