Military Folly-
At the launching of the battleship, "Wyoming" Congressman Mondell made an address in which he said:
"My best wish is that the new battleship may never fire a hostile shot, but be a force for good in the world's history."
This is a sentiment which meets with sincere 'amen' from the hearts of the world's best civilization.
In the present enlightened age it is a somewhat questionable honor to a state that great murdering machines- for such are battleships-should bear their names.
The "Wyoming" is today the largest and most powerful life and property destroyer afloat; but it will be only a short time until Germany, England, or France will "go us one better" and make a murderer big enough to "eat the Wyoming alive." "National safety" will simply compel them to do it. Then it will be our move again.
Statistics show that for several years past 70 per cent of the entire revenue received by this government is expended for war and preparation for war, and there is no war. But the day of this military folly is rapidly drawing to a close. Civilization is advancing and ere many years shall have passed the nations of earth will be spending their millions of dollars in projects looking toward the saving of human life and the betterment of the races rather than devising huge implements for spreading death and destruction.- Encampment Herald
