And Indians To Marry

Marriages between Indians and whites would be legalized under a bill introduced last week by Rep. Robert Leatherwood, Ill., whose county includes part of the Cherokee Reservation.
The law now forbids marriages between whites and Negroes or Indians, including those with Negro or Indian blood extending to the third generation. Leatherwood's bill would eliminate the provision against white and Indian marriages.
"As near as we can figure," he said, "from 25 to 33 percent of the Cherokees are married to whites now. A lot of them go into South Carolina to get married. Considering it in the light of the Federal Constitution, we think it's a bad law anyway."
