STATE RIGHTS MEETING

Columbia, Sept. 20. Since yesterday evening, our Town has exhibited an appearance extraordinary for this season. The citizens of the adjoining District, and from distant parts of the State, have been coming in from every direction, and we are very forcibly reminded of the first day of the session of our Legislature. Our expectations have been fully realized, in the concourse of citizens assembled on the occasion of the State Right Meeting, and we have only to regret that unavoidable circumstances have prevented several of our leading politicians from attending. The impossibility of returning to the lower country at this season, and sickness and death in the families of some of the warmest friends of such a meeting, have been causes of their absence.

The day is an uncommonly fine one, clear and for the season very cool. The concourse on the ground appointed for the meeting is immense, and increasing every moment. At a few minutes past 10 o'clock the meeting was opened by an Address to the God of Nations, by the Rev. Mr. Goulding, officiating Minister of the Presbyterian Church, and the Rev. Mr. Freeman, of the Methodist. Col. John Taylor, as Chairman of the Meeting, opened the discussion by a few pertinent and eloquent remarks.

Judge Harper followed at some length, arguing the Tariff for protection to be unconstitutional and oppressive—that it should be resisted by the State, and that a Convention should be called to meet after the adjournment of Congress. Judge Richardson is now upon the stand addressing the people in opposition to Convention Times.
