Miscellany.

[The following is the conclusion of the communication over the signature of "Director," which a press of other matter compelled us to divide in our last :...]

FOR THE PORTLAND GAZETTE.

THE result of the late trial of Bartlett against Willis, has afforded the disinterested patriots, alias Democrats, another opportunity to disseminate their falsehoods among the citizens of this district... They say Mr. Bartlett is a federalist... at the same time they assert this, they know a greater falsehood was never uttered by the father of lies. :

I ask, when or where Mr. B. ever acted with the federalists, or in what manner they ever supported him ?...and the democrats are challenged to produce a single instance, in support of their declarations; on the other hand, he was invited into this district to aid in the holy work of revolutionizing the political opinions of the citizens, to serve the purposes of a few ambitious individuals in their unprincipled and private views. It was first intended that this town should be the place of residence for this schism-maker among democrats.....to commence his "useful labors ;"and the "patriots without reproach" were invited to meet at Mr. Paine's, to enter into an obligation to give him their undivided support....but a certain old one, remarkable for his saving knowledge, suspected there might be some afterclap in the business, refused to act.....the consequence of this was, a young man was deputed to Saco, to recommend the man who was about to become the oracle of the party to their brethren in that place, and the morals, the genius & habits of the citizens there, were considered as in a proper state to receive the blessings of democracy. To assist in the grand and patriotic work, the Argus was soon after established....and Mr. B. acted the worthy part of caterer for its columns.....and in return, he was puffed, praised and recommended as a character deserving the highest honors.

But democrats, notwithstanding all their pretended disinterestedness, are no misers of power and controul.

Bartlett and a certain rich family in his neighborhood, who are not very modest in helping their "dear selves" to a share in the "loaves and fishes," quarrelled for the honor of being the servant of the sovereign people in Congress, for the county of York.

The democrats, fearful that they had brought up a bird to pick their own eyes out, it was resolved to enter on the "unprofitable contest of trying which could do the other the most harm"- and the printer of the Argus, in this instance, acted the part of the serpent in the fable : for as soon as he was warmed by the fire of prosperity, he bit the hand which had raised him into notice ; and like a true patriot of the present day, he enlisted on the strongest side.

Here opened a wide field for democratic warfare, and success attended that party which had the greatest dexterity and ability at lying and deceiving the people. But as the saying is, those who dance must pay the fiddler, so those who lie must and ought to be punished for it, And because these gentry are made to answer for their evil deeds, they set up the yelp of "Persecution," which will undoubtedly be echoed from Maine to Georgia, and be repeated again and again that federalists are the authors of it....but the lie is too barefaced to be swallowed by the dupes of their own party...and tho' the farcical attachment of the Argus Office is laughed at by all parties, yet when an attempt is made to represent a decision, in one of our highest courts of justice, as persecution, it ought to be viewed as a daring outrage against the safety and tranquility of civilized society. As well might the thief cry persecution at the whipping-post.

With respect to the particular charges made in the Argus against Mr. B. I am not acquainted, but I have been correctly informed that they were false, scandalous and malicious, and proved to be so, in the presence of an impartial Court and Jury, who gave a verdict of 1500 Dollars, which I hope will operate as a salutary lesson to libellers.
