Charles Track received a letter from relatives in Canada containing newspaper clippings of the trial of Nelson Sammy, who last fall shot and killed his wife and his wife's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Shewack. Mr. Shewack was a first cousin of Mr. Track.
Nelson Sammy's trial lasted for three days, and there was an attempt to bring in a defense of insanity and of witchcraft. The witchcraft was ruled out by the judge, and it was pointed out by the prosecution that an insane Indian in Canada is a real rarity.
Nelson Sammy was sentenced to 20 years in prison. He will again go on trial in April for shooting a Canadian officer, at which time the penalty may be death or life imprisonment.
