Full Text

I'm sad, I'm lone, there's none to cheer,
No one to speak of hope to me:
I feel that to me, life's not dear,
I am alone, on life's dark sea,
The flowers of Friendship, 'round my way,
Their sweetest perfumes, once did shed:
I look in vain, oh! shall I say,
I find her flowers now all dead.
To Pleasure's fount, she bade me come,
For her sweet waters, deep to drink.
I came; but still I find no home
From what she gives, I turn and shrink.
Hope, too, her richest treasures brought;
She bade me make them all my own.
I turn to grasp. Too late I'm taught
She only mocked; "and she's too's gone."
"Love's magic arms, she now stretched wide
She bade me to the rest I'd sought
Within her arms, I did abide:
Too late I find, "no peace she brought."
November, 1858.
