The jury found Lafayette Wilson guilty of voluntary manslaughter, Tuesday in Fulton County Superior Court Judge Bona Almand, presiding and recommended that he be sentenced to from 15 to 20 years.
Wilson killed Walter Cooper in an Ashby Street restaurant in September 1929 and fled to West Palm Beach Florida where he murdered another man. For the murder in Florida he stayed in prison from September 1941 to September 1945, after which he was returned to Atlanta to face trial for the murder of Cooper.
During the trial, Tuesday the state requested a death penalty, but the jury returned a verdict of voluntary manslaughter. Atty. J. O Ewing legal counsel for the defendant is considering making motion for a new trial providing of course new evidence comes to light.
