On the 25th November, at FLORENCE, a funereal festival was given in honor of CORRILLA, the celebrated extempore poetess, who died in that city 22 Brumaire, aged 72.
The talent of composing and reciting long and extempore poems on a given and unexpected subject, seems to be the peculiar offspring of the Italian soil. It arises principally from two causes; the first, the faculty of kindling and elevating the imagination to such a degree, that its creations are fertile and rapid, beyond the comprehension of common minds; the second arises from a language peculiarly luxuriant, flexible and melodious.—The number of poetical extemporists which Italy in all ages has produced, is astonishing; but among them the Chevalier Perfetti, who was born in the last century, is the most celebrated. He received the laureat-crown, which from time to time the Roman government bestows upon eminent poets. Petrarch and Tasso had obtained this distinction, but Perfetti was the first extempore poet, who had ever enjoyed it.
CORRILLA was born at Pistoie; but resided at Florence—Every traveller who made the tour of Italy, always visited her, and paid their homage to the extraordinary talent with which she was endowed. The renown which she acquired in different cities of Italy, induced Francis the First to invite her to Vienna. She was received with the most flattering distinction, and returned to Italy loaded with the favors of the Emperor. Catharine II, of Russia, who encouraged every kind of talent, and who seemed ambitious of every kind of glory, solicited Corilla to visit Petersburgh; but from her peculiar taste and disposition, and from a fear of the severity of the climate, she declined the flattering and magnificent offers of this great sovereign. In 1776 she went to Rome, where she obtained the greatest glory to which poetical ambition can aspire; she was received into the academy of ARCADIA, under the name of OLYMPIA, after having extemporized on several subjects, before 12 judges named by the academy, she was pronounced worthy of the laureat crown.
