An apparent attempt to steal back moonshine whiskey from policemen while they raided a "dive," just didn't work, and Sunday proved a bad day for bootleggers with the loss of 27 1-2 gallons that won't make unlawful retail markets.

It was a fast, complicated afternoon for Radio Patrolman T. L. Raborn and F. E. Kennedy but they made four arrests and seized ten gallons of the total Sunday seizure.

Police said it happened like this. An auto was inspected in the 500 block of East Ave., N. E., at 5:25 p. m. Sunday. Officers found nine and one half gallons in the trunk of the vehicle.

They started to make arrangements to confiscate the whiskey and car, when they were instructed to answer a call 285 Merritts Ave., N. E. Arriving at that address they arrested three persons and seized a half gallon of corn whiskey.

The tenant of the house, identified as Miss Americus Watson, 54, was charged with drunk and disorderly conduct, operating a dive. The other two people, identified as J. C. Byers, 56, and Miss Etta Pearson, 37 of the same address, were charged with drunk and disorderly, occupying a dive.

Police said they rushed back to the auto on East Avenue, N. E., after completing the arrests. Arriving at the scene they spotted a man taking four gallons of whiskey from the vehicle. He fled and made good his escape, but was picked up later at a nearby cafe. The man, identified as James Jones, 29, of 369 Bedford Pl., N. E. was charged with disorderly conduct-whiskey.

In a third issue Patrolmen D. S. Harris and R. D. Sims found 17 1-2 gallons of whiskey under a vacant house at 174 Odds Fellows Place.
