CONGRESS.

First SESSION:

SATURDAY, MAY 17.

SENATE. The Senate was principally engaged during the day, in the consideration of private bills. HOUSE. The two bills for renewing the expiring pensions of the widows of seamen, killed during the late war, on board public and private armed ships, were passed and sent to the Senate.

MONDAY, May 19.

SENATE. The bill from the House for the relief of sundry Revolutionary Officers and Soldiers, and Widows, was read and referred to the Committee on Pensions.

HOUSE. The bill "to admit iron and machinery for Rail-Roads free of duty," was ordered to a third reading. Mr. Wickliffe, from the retrenchment committee, reported in part, a joint resolution, in relation to the manner of executing the printing ordered by Congress, which was ordered to lie on the table.

The President transmitted to both Houses of Congress, copies of three Conventions, concluded between the United States of America and His Majesty the King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, the ratifications of which were exchanged at London on the 2d of last month.

1. A Convention, concluded 6th August, 1827, for continuing in force the provisions of the Convention of 3d July 1815.

2. A Convention, concluded 6th August 1827, for continuing in force the provisions of the Convention of 20th October, 1818.

3. A Convention concluded 29th September, 1826, for carrying into effect the provisions of the fifth article of the Treaty of Ghent, in relation to the Northeastern boundary of the United States.

Tuesday, May 20.

SENATE The bill authorizing a subscription of stock to the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal was taken up and discussed the whole day. A motion to lay the bill on the table was lost, by a vote of 18 to 28.

HOUSE. The House reconsidered the vote by which they rejected, on the preceding day, the bill granting lands to the State of Ohio to aid in making Canals, and again rejected the bill by a vote of 87 to 86. The bill making appropriations for a breakwater at the mouth of the Delaware Bay, and bill granting lands to aid the State of Ohio in making the Miami Canal were both passed.

The bill to abolish the agency on the coast of Africa, was also acted on; but an amendment moved by Mr. Mercer, granting an appropriation for the present year for its continuance, prevailed.

Wednesday, May 21.

SENATE. The bill authorizing a subscription of stock to the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal, was ordered to a third reading by a vote of 29 to 17.

HOUSE. Among several bills ordered to a third reading to-day, are the various appropriation bills for the first quarter of 1828. Three bills on the subject of the improvements of post roads were laid on the table.

THURSDAY, May 22.

SENATE. The bill authorizing the subscription of stock to the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal was read a third time and passed. About three hours were spent in the consideration of Executive business.

HOUSE. Mr. Hamilton from the select committee on retrenchment, reported a resolution on the subject of the printing of the House which will be called up to-morrow.
