Leader of White Elks to Speak At Buffalo Meet
By Trezzvant W. Anderson

Washington (ANP)—When J. Finley Wilson leads his "antlered herd" into Buffalo, N. Y., Aug. 26 for the fifty-second annual Grand Lodge sessions, there will be a new and decidedly "different" atmosphere for the first time in the history of the IBPOEW. This year the guest of honor will be Dr. Joseph Kyles, Grand Exalted Ruler of the white Elks—BPOE.

It will be the first time that a representative of the white counterpart of the IBPOEW will have ever extended the hand of fellowship. This marks a significant turn of events in the order which Wilson has headed for the last 29 years.

Dr. Kyles will present the 1951 Elijah Lovejoy Medal of the IBPOEW to Dr. Ralph Bunche, UN Mediator, this year's winner of Elkdom's top civil liberties honor.

This medal is awarded to the American who, in the judgement of the Elks, rendered the greatest service to racial relations during the year. Last year it went to Gov. Alfred E. Driscoll of New Jersey. Elijah Lovejoy was a white Illinois newspaperman who was lynched by a white mob because he advocated equality for Negroes.

Gov. Thomas E. Dewey of New York will also be a guest of the Elks at a "Champions of Human Rights Breakfast" Monday morning, Aug. 27. He will be introduced by Mayor Joseph Mruk of Buffalo.

The usual features of the Elks annual sessions will be carried out this year as always, a bathing beauty contest, the oratorical contest, and the usual big parade on Tuesday, Aug. 28.

In addition, a special memorial service will be held Sunday night Aug. 26, for four prominent Elks who died during the past year. Dr. E. T. Belsaw of Mobile, Ala., will eulogize the late Grand Secretary James E. Kelley; Lieut. George W. Lee of Memphis will eulogize the late Col. Roscoe Conkling Simmons; the Rev. Archibald J. Carey of Chicago will eulogize the late ex-Cong. Oscar DePriest and Judge Perry B. Jackson of Cleveland will eulogize the late Grand Treasurer Theodore S. Greene, former assistant attorney general of Ohio.
