The following picture of the Governor of Kentucky was drawn by General Harrison, and exhibited to the world from his head quarters, Detroit, 9th October, 1813.
"The crotchet formed by the front line and General Desha's division was an important point. At that place the venerable Governor of Kentucky was posted, who, at the age of sixty-six, preserves all the vigor of youth, the ardent zeal which distinguished him in the revolutionary war, and the undaunted bravery which he manifested at King's Mountain."
Compare this picture with that of smiling Caleb Strong, that meets you at every turn in the streets of Boston, and in the taverns and dramshops in the country; or figure to yourself his august personage in front of his tremendous cannon on the right of the gun-house on Boston common, not omitting the old tattered flag of the Union, with its rags and stringlets, lessening in dimensions at every breeze. Compare these two pictures, and then judge of the different figure they will make in the pages of future history; the one exposing his life in the front rank of battle with the Indians and the English, and the other sitting, smirking, and smiling, like a withered old maid, for his picture!
If New England, and the principal characters in New-England are losing their consequence, while "the back woodsmen" are rising in character, and increasing in consequence, who are we to blame for it? If the world at large and if posterity makes an immensity of difference in their estimation of the characters of his Excellency Governor Shelby and his Excellency Caleb Strong are we to wonder at it? Every public character paints his own picture Shelby and Strong have painted themselves, as they will appear in the eyes of future generations.
