New-York, Oct. 4, (noon.)
Late last night, the Spanish frigate Cornelie, capt. Don Joseph Rodriquez de Arias, arrived at the quarantine ground. She sailed from Cadiz on the 20th of August. This vessel has brought out his Excellency Don Lewis de Onis, Minister Plenipotentiary and Envoy Extraordinary from his Catholic Majesty Ferdinand the 7th, near the United States of America; also, Don Bartholomew Rengenet Consul from His Catholic Majesty to Philadelphia, their ladies, daughters and domestics; and Mr. Richard Bailey, of this city.
On the 20th ult. the frigate spoke the ship Ariadne, Wyberg, 27 days from Liverpool to Charleston--informed, that the English had got possession of all the islands on the coast of Holland.
We also learn, that after the battle of Talavera, the French army attacked Gen. Venegas in Aranjuez, and were driven back with considerable loss, after three hard fought battles. Venegas afterwards returned towards Sierra Morena principally for want of provisions, the French having destroyed every thing. The French garrison of Madrid had gone into Retiro, with their adherents; the people of Arragon having risen up against them, and gone out to meet Venegas in his advance.
Gerona had been relieved by gen. Blake, who was concentrating his army and collecting artillery at Tostosa, for the purpose, of going against Saragossa, where the French had been obliged to concentrate their force, in consequence of all the people of Arragon having rose en masse against them.
Gerona had defended itself as bravely as Saragossa--even the women performed prodigies of valor.
The Spanish mountaineers of Arragon, Navarre, and Catalonia, had entered France in different places, burnt several towns and laid heavy contributions on others.
The Junta were still at Seville, but expected to be able to go to Madrid in a short time.
Joseph Bonaparte with 6000 men, had left Madrid, and gone to Somma Sierra, which is the strong pass from Madrid to France.
The Spanish 74, St. Folgencie, had arrived at Cadiz from Lima, with eight millions of dollars.
Mr. Erskine on Monday last, presented his letters of recall, and took leave of the President; and Mr. Jackson was on Tuesday presented to him.
