SAN FRANCISCO—Negotiations between the Sacramento Northern Railroad and the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen were in the hands of a federal mediator last week after the Brotherhood's membership on the property voted over 90 per cent in favor of authorizing strike action if necessary to break a management-created deadlock.
The overwhelming vote authorizing the strike marked the second time in two years that the carrier's refusal to satisfactorily settle back time claims and grievances forced emergency action.
In 1953 after a similar vote okaying a strike and after the men had withdrawn from the service for 12 days, management agreed to a satisfactory settlement of similar grievance cases.
Vice-President R. H. McDonald is assisting General Chairman W. C. Butterfield and his committee.
