Barricades and Wreck
Shops In Lebanon

BEIRUT, Lebanon,
Flaming shops and barricades blocked the streets and sidewalks Tuesday in violent protest against Lebanon's pro-Western government.
Rioters chased and smashed people and shops.
Demonstrators roamed through Beirut for the second straight day.
Organized bands were determined to force a general strike and bring business to a standstill.
They smashed windows and wrecked the insides of shops that defied their orders to close.
Taxis that ventured into the streets were smashed.
A few people who went out in downtown streets were scattered by the roving bands.
More barricades were set up in the streets and some were set afire to make them more effective as roadblocks.
Feverish political maneuvering was underway in an effort to restore order.
The political opposition disclaimed any responsibility for the bloodshed and violence, blaming subversive elements working in the ranks of peaceful demonstrators.
