Full Text

The Herald of the Times, speaking on the subject of proscription, in the late election, says, "In the two or three thousand state officers that are annually elected by the State Legislature, there were something less than a dozen removals made."

If the editor of the Times had been candid enough to tell the reasons why no more removals were made, it would have saved us trouble. The reason then why the national republican majority made no more removals was, because nine-tenths of the offices were held by national republicans already; and we venture to say, on our own responsibility, that the Legislature this year, did remove every officer in the state, friendly to Jackson and Fenner, whom they dared to remove--every one. Three of our sheriffs were removed, and national republicans put in their places; the sheriff's in the other two counties were theirs before; and so were nine-tenths, or nineteen-twentieths of all other officers who have not been removed. They have "rewarded their friends, and punished their enemies," to the full extent of their daring. Small as it is, even now, the proportion of officers removed by the Clay party in this state, in the pride of their newly-gotten power, is as much greater than that by the President, as the whole nation is greater than this little state; and yet we are forbidden to talk of Proscription.

The Herald of the Times claimed few removals in state offices after the election, but the response argues the national republican majority removed every Jackson and Fenner supporter they dared, as they already held most positions, rewarding friends and punishing enemies to the extent of their power.
