CANOE SONG.
The paddle dips, the water drips
From off the shiny blade:
The light canoe glides swiftly through
The ripples it has made.
Oh, what a night! The golden light
Of moonbeams everywhere;
While from the trees the cooling breeze
Lends fragrance to the air.
Along the stream the ripples gleam,
And gliding by the shore.
They dance in bliss and shyly kiss
The ferns just drooping o'er.
While all around the soothing sound
Of nature seems to say:
"There is no care; life everywhere
Is one long joyous day."
On such a night, when hearts are light
'Tis easy to believe
Life has no cares, no strife, no snares,
No vain regrets to grieve.
For everything seems tuned to sing
That sweetly soothing lay:
"There is no care; life everywhere
Is one long joyous day."
