An Adjustment In View. - The indications at Washington now promise an early and a satisfactory settlement of the matters at issue concerning slavery and the territories. The two bills reported by Mr. Douglas, from the Territorial Committee of the Senate, and the bill of Mr. McClernand in the House, will probably form the basis of compromise which will include the main points of the whole subject.

The admission of California, it now seems likely, will be coupled with enactments for organizing Territorial Governments in New Mexico and Utah, without the proviso. Thus the South will be satisfied, and the North will, substantially, lose nothing. The existence or non-existence of slavery in New Mexico and Utah will be determined, as in any case it would finally be determined, by natural laws which will have their way, sooner or later, in spite of all subordinate legislation.

Let the question, the whole series of them, be settled. That is what the country demands. A feeling of anxious expectation long prevalent on this subject, is growing into a feeling of impatient suspense which worries the public mind and makes it indignant at delay. There seems to be a general belief that the difficulties of the case have been unnecessarily aggravated, and that it is high time for Congress to go to work and despatch the public business. - Baltimore American.
