THE DAILY GATE CITY
DOCTOR YANT . REFUSES TO SIGN
Former Keokuk Outfielder is Hold out and Will Probably Always Want to be King.
"Rabbit" Yant has again joined the holdout colony, small though it is in the Central Association ranks. The tooth puller, former Keokuk outfielder and still subject to the rule of Ned Egan, received a formal contract from the Packer boss again this season. While Yant has not played ball for several seasons Egan sent out to him the annual contract. Of the incident the Burlington Gazette says:
"One of the annual pleasantries of baseball is the regular spring tender of a contract by Manager E. F. Egan to Dr. Roscoe Yant of this city. It is the third ceremony of this character since Dr. Yant regretfully donned his baseball uniform laid aside his glove, relegated his man's size hat and discarded the L. F. title for that of D. D. S. And don't get this mixed up with doctor of divinity, because there is nothing in it.
Dr. Yant got his regular contract this season, but he refused to sign. Last year he held out for a salary of $6,000. Manager Egan was shocked and surprised and refused to consider it. Doc was firm and he did not play ball but continued his regular work-outs around the dentist chair. Doc considers that he becomes more valuable every year, so this season he fixed the price of his services at $7,000. No doubt if Manager Egan continues in the baseball business for the next decade Doc Yant will become the most valuable prospect in the land."
