Kennebec Bar, Aug. 16th 1859.
Mr. Editor:—Situated as we are, away
from the regular thoroughfares, deep down
by the river side, very little will be known
of us unless we embrace an opportunity now
and then to speak of ourselves and diggings
through your valuable paper.
There never has been a year since mining
operations first commenced on the middle
Fork, that more extensive preparations were
made for mining or fairer prospects for remuneration presented themselves.
From Oregon Bar some four miles above,
down to Kennebec, the bed of the river is
dry nearly all the way. Many of the companies are employing from fifty to one hundred hands, and pay on an average to each
hand $35, per month and board.
The Main Company on this Bar, are working seventy-five men and intend soon to increase the number to one hundred and fifty.
They have been engaged for several weeks
past in stripping off the top dirt, but will
soon reach where it pays. The claim is
known to be a good one, it having paid very
rich last year.
The Little Kennebec claim is now being
worked on a very extensive scale, and has
very flattering prospects. It was thoroughly
prospected last year.
Lively towns are springing up along the
river. On Wild Cat Bar just opposite to us
on the El Dorado side, there is one which
has five saloons, a livery stable, store and
many other buildings, all having been erected this season.
The democracy had a grand rally here
last night, (Monday,) and were addressed
by Messrs: Safford, Beach, Harville, and
Makins. The Speakers done credit to themselves and good service for democratic principles. You may put this precinct down as
safe for one hundred democratic majority.
Yours, &c.,
KENNEBEC.
