Latitude 49 deg. 58 min. 59 sec.
Instruments, the base minions of a profligate court are assiduously applied; calculated and systematic machination immediately commenced.
Equal Altitudes of the Sun for regulating the Clock.
American governments, and the accumulating products of American industry, whetted the avarice of indigent courtiers, and exhibited a lenitive for the fettering consciences of politicians, who, for opulence and infamy, might consent to barter the dearest rights of their fellows. Unsatisfied with entire commercial absorption; unsatisfied with a generous and filial promptitude to aid the mother in every necessity, a remote and foreign power resolves to derive hence more directly and more copiously, the means of pampering imperious lordlings—and for this. Colonial security furnishes the preposterous pretext! Exaction unqualified, was the tone of Britain to our devoted country: and in implicit obedience to laws from whose enaction all power of dissent was denied, was prepared for her a bondage most onerous and humiliating. Picture to yourselves, fellow-citizens, the harpies of lawless domination, plotting the introduction of ruffian mercenaries (2) to the sacred recesses of domestic privacy; let us glance for a moment on the death-warrant of civil security, (3) which was to drag the innocent and defenseless sufferer from his home, his family and his laws, to an irritated and prostitute tribunal. With the flushing features of humane indignation you will turn from the view and ask, impatient ask, the blood of such distinguished, such monstrous offenders.
Mean error of the clock for the 16th, 1 57,1
The equations for the change of the Sun's declination being almost insensible, were not applied.
Observations of the Eclipse,
Corrected by the error of the clock, deduced as above.
