Tucson (University of Arizona campus)- It was announced today that four outstanding Future Farmer members will receive $1,200 in scholarships awarded by the Standard Oil Company of California. The four scholarships in the amount of $300 each were made available to Ronald Thompson, Willcox High School, Willcox; Mack Tarwater, Chandler High School, Chandler; Robert Rush, Agua Fria Union High School, Avondale and Milford Sutter, Glendale Union High School, Glendale. Their selection was based on outstanding achievement in agriculture, scholarship, rural leadership and FFA activities. These scholarships are for the school year 1961-62.
Ronald is currently serving his FFA Chapter as representative on the Student Council; he has served as Class Vice-President; member of FFA Annual Staff; President of Catholic Teens; member football team and Annual Staff. His supervised farming program consists of 30 acres of grain sorghum. His teacher of vocational agriculture and FFA Adviser is Page Bakarich. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Don Thompson of Willcox.
Mack is currently serving his chapter as secretary; he has served as Vice-President of his junior and senior classes; President of the LDS Seminary; President Explorer District in the Scout program. His supervised farming program consists of 100 broilers and he is feeding out 25 steers. His teachers of vocational agriculture and FFA Advisers at Chandler High School were Carlos Moore and Paul W. Vance. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Burl Tarwater of Chandler.
Robert is currently serving as President of his FFA Chapter. He is a member of Key Club; Hi-Y Vice President; member of Boy's State; Health and Safety Council; he has also participated in football, and was named All Conference Tackle. He supervised farming program consists of 11 Hereford calves and 3 hives of bees. His teacher of vocational agriculture and FFA Adviser is Paul A. Bell. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Tamillo of Goodyear.
Milford's supervised farming program consists of 50 calves, 14 acres of alfalfa and 25 acres of barley. He has served as chapter reporter and secretary; member of Student Council; manager of varsity baseball team; school band; school chorus; participated in school play. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Sutter of Glendale. His teacher of vocational agriculture and FFA Adviser is Owen Allen.
Named as alternate scholarship winners are Billy Roberson of Willcox; Barry Callaway of Prescott and Dennis Jenson of Coolidge. They will receive a $200.00 scholarship in the event one of the winner fails to use his award.
Their selection was made by a special committee including Jack Swift, Publicity Manager, Arizona Public Service; Warren Langfitt, Assistant Cashier, Valley National Bank, Phoenix; Dale Gibson, Superintendent, Florence Union High School, Florence; F. J. Benedict, Superintendent, Tempe Union High School, Tempe and Chauncey Coor, Director, Secondary Education, State Department of Public Instruction.
