Extract of a letter from Capt. Lunt, of the schooner Gideon, of this port, to his owner here, dated CURACOA, April 2.
“The 23d March I sailed from Tobago, 2 days after I was taken by a French privateer brig and sent to this place, where I arrived in 4 days and found Capt. Gerrish, of Newbury-Port, and Capt. Brown of Portsmouth, in much the same predicament excepting they were from English ports which have not been captured by the French, which is considerably in their favor. The vessel is hauled up with the rest of the prizes, sails unbent, hatches sealed, and a copy of my papers gone on to St. Domingo for trial. When we shall have an answer I am unable to say, but expect we shall all be condemned—we are allowed to live on board and have fresh provisions." I was taken in lat. 14. 00. long. 62. 30, my mate and three of my people were taken on board the privateer where they still remain. George Barber who was impressed on board an English sloop of war, has since run away and is now on board the Gideon, after having been branded on both his arms very badly. Since my arrival here a ship from Portland bound to Trinidad loaded with lumber, has been sent in, Capt. Joshua Rogers who is now on board the privateer. I suppose you have heard of the capture of Trinidad, and they are now going against Guadaloupe.
