M'CORMICK DEFEATS BIG BILL THOMPSON

[BY MORNING JOURNAL SPECIAL LEASED WIRE]

Chicago, Sept. 12.--Figures from yesterday's statewide primary election tonight showed that Medill McCormick defeated William Hale Thompson, mayor of Chicago, for the republican nomination for United States senator by a plurality of 45,930 with 600 precincts of the 5,454 in the state missing.

Final figures from Chicago, however, gave Thompson a plurality of 15,535, while McCormick's plurality outside of Cook county and not including the 600 scattered precincts missing, was 61,465.

It is believed that the complete returns which probably will not be available until tomorrow, will not materially change the relative figures.

M'CORMICK AND LEWIS
WINNERS IN ILLINOIS
[BY MORNING JOURNAL SPECIAL LEASED WIRE]

Chicago, Sept. 12.—Medill McCormick, republican, will contest the Illinois senatorship this fall with James Hamilton Lewis, democratic incumbent, having been nominated at yesterday's primaries by an apparent plurality of 62,000 over Mayor William Hale Thompson of Chicago, and Congressman George Edmond Foss.

Mayor Thompson carried Cook county by 17,000, fewer than one-third of the normal number of voters going to the polls or about 135,000.

Former Governor Richard Yates, and William E. Mason, incumbent, were nominated by the republicans for congressmen-at-large. They will contest the election with M. H. Cleary and W. E. Williams, nominated by the democrats.

Fred A. Britten carried the Ninth district over Fletcher Dobyns nearly 3 to 1. Niels Juul, congressman from the Seventh district, was nominated by a comparatively small margin over M. A. Michaelsen, a Thompson supporter.

Minority Leader of the House James R. Mann, of the Second congressional district, was nominated for re-election without opposition, as was Joseph G. Cannon, of the Eighteenth district. Mr. Cannon will be opposed by only one candidate, a socialist.
