DePreist Directs Command Performance For Bangkok

BANGKOK (ANP)-Percussionist-conductor James A. DePreist, nephew of singer Marian Anderson, made a command performance here on August 10, before the king and queen.

DePreist, here on a State Department sponsored cultural tour was guest conductor of the symphony orchestra. He has also served as visiting professor of orchestral conducting at the Fine Arts Department, University of Bangkok.

The talented young specialist's command performance included some of America's most outstanding classical compositions.

DePreist left his role as conductor momentarily to play Beethoven's "Emperor Piano Concerto" from memory. His performance was further highlighted when he conducted the entire concert without music.

DePreist left the United States on Feb. 1, on a four-month tour of the East. He is traveling alone as an American specialist in music. He has lectured in principal cities and been guest conductor.
