Sept. 13.--In letter, No. 3, I gave you account of the permanent residence business--and nothing has transpired on the subject.--It is said, that the spot which will probably be chosen is like the Garden of Eden.--I hope that there will not be many Eves there.
The House has so far acceded to the idea of the discrimination between the Senate and them, as it to admit of the former's receiving an enhanced pay.
The SALARY BILL has passed, and a friend of mine, having given me a Squint at the Act, I send you an exact account of the Salaries established by law--viz.
Dollars per ann.
Secretary of the Treasury, 3500
Secretary in the department of State, 3500
Secretary in the department of War, 3000
Comptroller of the Treasury, 2000
Auditor, 1500
Treasurer, 2000
Register, 1250
Governor of the Western Territory for his salary as such, and for discharging the duties of Superintendant of Indian Affairs in the Northern Department. 2000
Judges of the West'n Territory each, 800
Assistant of the Secretary of the Treasury. 1500
Chief Clerk in Department of State, 800
Chief Clerk in Department of War, 600
Secretary of the Western Territory, 750
Principal Clerk of the Comptroller, 800
Principal Clerk of the Auditor, 600
Principal Clerk of the Treasury, 600
Dollars Sound--if it was said, that such or such an officer should have six, or seven hundred pounds per annum, it would be thought moderate; but two thousand dollars sound loud and alarming; I wish this was the only instance in which the world was led away by sound.
THE PRESIDENT has been pleased to nominate, and with the consent of the Senate, to appoint, the Hon. ALEXANDER HAMILTON, Esq. Secretary of the Treasury--The HON. HENRY KNOX, Esq. Secretary at War--SAMUEL MEREDITH, Esq. (of Philadelphia) Treasurer. OLIVER WOLCOTT, Esq. (of Connecticut) Auditor. JOSEPH NOURSE, Esq. (of New-York) Register.
It is said (and there is very little doubt of its being fact) that the Secretary of the Treasury has appointed WILLIAM DUER, Esq. Assistant Secretary.
