Full Text

For the Enquirer,

THE SHORELESS RIVER.

All earth is narrow prison,
All time a fleeting breath,
And the battle of life not worth the strife,
Were all to end in death
But the boundless deep above us-
Forever an outward way-
Is a promise of life eternal,
With room for the soul to stray.
When clouds in earth's vales lie darkest,
I rise and wander thence
On waves of the shoreless river,
That lave the far immense.
I smile then to think I could murmur,
That my portion of earth seemed small,
As I float away in the distance
And see the lessening ball,
While worlds like gems lie gleaming
In the ever deepening flood,
And suns are the shining lilies
That bloom on the river of God.
On surge the waves eternal,
To the vast forever more.
Past isles unnumbered sweeping.
But never find a shore.
