For the Kentucky Gazette.

We want jurisprudence in making public improvements for the general benefit of the state at large, being apprehensive more money is applied to some works than ought to be—whilst others of more beneficial consequence, are neglected.

Would it not be much better for the state to carry on a good central road through it, in the most barren part of the country, to unite the most business and wealthy parts of the state? We have now a good road, with bridges complete and finishing, reaching from Maysville to the South and West sides of the Kentucky river, much which work has been given out at high prices, in consequence of the contractors taking a part in stock, the Commonwealth being responsible for an equal amount of stock sold. Would it not be better for the state to embark with their means, in extending this road at fair prices, to intersect the Nashville or Tennessee line, and in constructing a Rail Road branch through Russellville to the Ohio river. The traveller, rather than follow the great distance of water communication round the state, would be expedited with safety and cheapness, in passing immediately through the centre of the state, on a good road, with good bridges, in about one third of the time, viewing a most pleasant part of the country. Our trade with the South is great, and yearly increasing, in all our productions, therefore we need not speak of the great importance of a Rail Road communication with Charleston. Barbecues of eating or drinking never made a road. Yet, we hope its consequences will produce a pleasant plan of Union, with the more important aid of a liberal subscription. We are not the apologists of banks, particularly when they play their own game without taking the people for partners. But we have them, and there is no good reason why we should not unite with Tennessee, South and North Carolina, in a branch, intended to reach the production and improvement of our country, and facilitate commercial exchanges in a much more extensive trade.

We anticipate it will meet with opposition; but it will probably be from large participants in the present banks. It is not reasonable their interest in this respect is that of the community at large.
