A Summary of Important Events
FIFTY SECOND CONGRESS
In the senate on the 3d, the new western senators arrived and were sworn in. The senate was called to order by President pro tem Ingalls and Vice President Morton was escorted to the chair by a committee of the senate.

The senate spent the day in organizing committees and other routine work.

In the house the deadlock over the speakership continued. The Democrats refused to vote for any Republican candidate, and the Republicans refused to support a Democrat. The balloting resulted in a tie between Reed and McKinley, with 165 votes each, and the remaining votes scattered among minor candidates.
