Event Details
Snellson, the late cashier of the Branch Bank of Virginia at Petersburg, embarked at Quebec in the Mary Cummings for Liverpool. While at Montreal under the assumed name of Maxwell, he exchanged $1,800 of the bills at the counting house of Messrs. Horatio Gates & Co. On his passage in the Chambly to Quebec, he made repeated enquiries concerning the value of American bills, the means of conveyance to the West Indies, and other questions which left no doubt of his being a guilty person.
