Glance at the Court of Impeachment.—
First day.—Galleries crowded—Senate gravely seated—Managers at their desks—Respondent and Counsel in their places—House of Representatives in attendance—Profound silence.—
The eye wanders over the imposing scene with interest—it rests upon a small group at a remote point within the privileged precincts. Who are the three persons in such close and animated converse? The enquiring eye examines them for a moment before their identity is ascertained: they are Benton, Duff and Van Buren—the two latter cheek to cheek, and apparently almost caressing—whispering in each other's ears—and so tickled with what passes between them, that you would suppose them two brothers just met after years of separation. What can be the subject which so delights them—How strange that a high officer of the government—the President de facto—should in such a place endure and even caress a fellow who had but a little before, shook the rod over his head, in his newspaper, in the face of the, nation. But Van is a politic man, and (as Barry said last year) Duff has great influence and we must overlook his arrogance.—O tempora, O mores!—Balt. Pat.
