N. YORK POLICE OFFICE—Robbing a Doctor,

Yesterday afternoon, Doctor Cheeseman having returned home from his professional tour, left his horse and gig, valued at $500, at the door. In the course of a few minutes gig and horse were gone, and no one could tell whither. The doctor set out in pursuit of his missing equipage, which he ascertained in possession of Mr. McGrath the Street Inspector of the 6th ward, who had recovered it from the man that stole it. It appeared that a negro fellow, who escaped from the State Prison for a similar robbery, calling himself Samuel Williams but whose real name is Moses Johnson, passing through Grand street, saw the gig at the doctor's door, and perhaps thinking that exercise would be good for his health after his long confinement, jumped in and drove off to the 5 Points, where he invited another negro to join him in taking a ride, and after being absent some time, they returned to the grog shop from whence they set out. Unluckily for them, but fortunately for Dr. Cheeseman, McGrath came by at the time, and not being satisfied with the answer to his question, how they got the gig and horse, he took the whole concern in custody, put the horse and gig in the Almshouse stables, and the men in the watch house. This morning they were placed before Justice Hopson and confronted with their accuser. After hearing all that Johnson and his companion had to say on the subject, the magistrate committed the former to take his trial for the felony, and dismissed the latter, considering him innocent of all participation in the offence.
