Historical Society Negotiates for 16 Acres of Land in Red River Valley
The state historical society negotiated Friday for the purchase of 16 acres on the site of historic Fort Abercrombie, first federal garrison established in North Dakota, from John Loff, Abercrombie farmer, Supt. Russell Reid announced.
Reid said an agreement had been reached with Loff and that arrangements were being made to complete the transaction.
The Fort Abercrombie site is one of North Dakota's principal historic projects, Reid said. It is the scene of the first federal fort in the state, established on a protected bend on the Red River of the North by Lieut. Col. John J. Abercrombie in August 1857,he explained.
The park superintendent said he intended to use WPA labor to rebuild log palisades surrounding the old garrison and mark building sites. It is one of 57 of North Dakota's state parks.
