What the most prudent people foresaw has now happened, which is, that our divisions prove our ruin, and our enemies take pains to increase them. The traitors of their country now take off the mask, and their example has drawn off others, for, besides the relations of Maffei, les Peres, Fabiani, and Durazzo, the family of Alessandrini are gone over to the enemy, though our General has loaded them with favours. Gapiassi has likewise joined them; nevertheless their treachery has not succeeded, being beaten wherever they appear. But we are made some amends by the acquisition of Count Gentili, who has abandoned the enemy, and joined us out of pure love for his country. We have just received advice that our people have made themselves masters of Oletta, after an obstinate engagement, and made the French garrison prisoners of war, besides taking a great quantity of all sorts of ammunition there. Our General flatters himself that we shall be masters of San Fiorenzo too, before it can be relieved.
