Full Text

Wayside Flower.
Oh! tell me blushing flower
Thy mission here!
Why breathe thy fragrant hour
On this dark sphere,
Where care-worn hearts alone
In grief for sin atone?
Dost thou not fear the night
Stern winter heaves
His frosty breath will try
Thy tender leaves!
The blush so sweetly laid
On thy fair cheek, will fade
Relentless storms will shake
Thy life's frail thread!
Portentous clouds will break
Above thy head!
Huge drops from sorrow's sky
Will lurk within thine eye!
Why raise thy soft bloom there
To pine away?
No eye to shed a tear
At thy decay.
No gentler spot could find
To tread thy tiny vine.
