"It is truly gratifying that we shall be able to elect from this county, six members to the General Assembly—one in the Senate and five in the House of Representatives, all firm and steady friends of internal improvements, and declared friends of Clay and Benton. Benton will be re-elected, I think, to the U. States' Senato. We can now count all but two, of the number of members necessary to make a choice who are firmly pledged for Benton. Six months ago we had lost all hopes of him. But there has been one of the most astonishing revolutions in public opinion that has ever been heard of or known in our government. The amendments to our state constitution proposed by a wild and disorganizing Jackson "Republican" Legislature, have fallen through. The Jacksonians, with Benton at their head, have been grievously discomfited by the "people."
The returns received from St. Louis go to confirm the anticipations of the above writer. The St. Louis Beacon (Jackson) remarks that St. Louis is not the state of Missouri, and assures its readers, that the next Legislature will contain a majority of two thirds, or three fourths for electing a Jackson man to the United States Senate. We had the same story about Kentucky, but how different the result. Why, the people are for Clay, and all this boasting will never deceive them. Be patient and resigned, gentlemen.
