Full Text

As a good deal of criticism has been expressed over the appointment of Senator Vest's son, the following from the World will rectify mistaken ideas on the subject: It is due to the son of Senator Vest, who sailed away yesterday, to say that his good fortune has been exaggerated. He is not to glide gayly around the world inspecting Consulates after the manner of Parson Newman and picking up curios here and there. He is only to be a Consular Clerk, and his salary is to be only $1,000 a year. There are thirteen of these Consular Clerks, and they are supposed to be apprentices to the business. They are cadets, in fact, and are open to promotion in the service under rules modelled after the English Consular system. It is due to Mr. Vest to say that his appointment was secured from President Arthur, and the present Administration had nothing whatever to do with it.
