SALEM, Mass., Dec. 1.—Chewing gum, grinning broadly, and making wisecracks, "Bossy" Gillis, Newburyport's absentee mayor, stepped out into the open air today after spending two months in Salem jail for selling gasoline without a permit,
The mayor greeted 200 persons including numerous reporters and photographers, who had been waiting for his release for more than an hour.
"Don't rush me now," Gillis cautioned the cameramen. "I'll give you all a break."
"Bossy" was in an exceedingly jovial mood when he emerged from the big red brick structure from which he had directed Newburyport's municipal affairs.
