An Eighth Air Force Bomber Station, England—S-Sgt. Leonard H. Belair of Putnam, 33-year-old radio operator-gunner on the crew of a B-17 Flying Fortress, has recently been awarded an oak leaf cluster to the air medal. He won the decoration for "courage, coolness and skill" and has outstanding performance of duty during a number of Eighth Air Force attacks on German war targets.
Before entering the Army Air Forces in September, 1942, he was employed by Marot Junior College, Thompson, Conn., as a maintenance man. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph M. Belair of Overlook avenue, Putnam.
Sgt. Belair won his wings at Buckingham Field, Fort Myers, in November, 1943. He is now a member of the 486th Bomb. Group which led the Eighth Air Force in bombing results for the month of September.
