The Illinois State Register moralizes thusly:
"It is surprising how far a Union soldier who votes a Democratic ticket falls from grace in the esteem of the Republican party. It is no less astounding to what heights of exaltation and patriotism the ex-Confederate rises when he joins that faithful organization. It is a vital doctrinal tenet of faith of the Republican party that a converted Confederate outranks in patriotism and loyalty a Democratic Union soldier; that allegiance to the Republican party is the test of patriotism, and not a faithfulness to the Constitution and laws."
