DOUGLAS, Ariz., Feb. 7. (UP)—Dr. Helge Ingstad, the Norwegian ethnologist who spent three hazardous months in the rugged Sierra Madre mountains of northern Mexico, said today the savage Apache Indians now are ruled mainly by their women.
Dr. Ingstad, resting after his arduous expedition, said the "most startling" disclosure of the expedition was that the savage Indians, object of painstaking study to determine their true age, exiles now are "a community made up almost entirely of women."
"Most of the bucks have been slain by the Mexicans," he explained.
He himself saw only five Apache—four women, a man and a baby.
"The man was the wildest," the scientist said. "He kept far away. I was unable to get very near any of them except a woman, seemingly the leader, who was spokesman."
After wandering for three months through mountain wilderness which he said was "the most wild and magnificent I have ever seen," he reported finding caves of civilization so old it would require months
"I found caves that had been inhabited at some dim time in the past by a tribe of pygmies. I found bones to establish the height of these people at from three to four feet.
"I spent three months trying to contact the remnant of the tribe," he said. "To say they are as wild as wolves is inaccurate. We saw wolves several times before we saw the apache. We found many camps made by the wild band. I am convinced only luck and months of work would make possible a fraternizing with the band and a close study of them."
