THE foreign Gazettes brought over by last Saturday's mail, contain a very long memorial, signed John Adams, in which this deputy of the thirteen cantons prays very hard for their High Mightinesses to acknowledge the Independence of the American saints. We will not trespass so far on the patience of our readers, as to lay before them a translation of a long and tedious repetition of American grievances so often talked of, and as often proved to be groundless and delusive: Suffice it to say, his transatlantic Excellency labors all he can to prove, that there is the greatest similarity between their present situation and that of the Netherlands, when contending for liberty, and shaking off the galling yoke of the Spaniards: That besides the political reasons which ought to determine the Republic in favor of the Americans, there has been between the former and latter a kind of spiritual affinity, as the Republic had, in the year 1608, given refuge to those persecuted saints who fled to them from Great-Britain, and 12 years after, emigrated to America, and founded four of the Northern States, in the new world: and that the Dutch themselves had peopled the provinces of New York and New-Jersey. But, lest all these considerations should weigh little in his Favor, the subtle John Adams touches a chord which ever sounded harmony to a Dutch ear, and pays them what may be called a compliment a la Hollandoise, by showing, that their interest is concerned in this matter, and expatiating on the numberless advantages which the Republic may derive from acknowledging the Independency of America. It is not known yet what answer he has received; but the latter argument, if the Mynheers, upon mature consideration, should find it well supported, is the only one likely to serve the American cause.
