Full Text

Schemes.—Many schemes are set afloat to make shipwreck of Mr. Clay's popularity. Among these is the one, in the Senate, referring the subject of the public lands to the Committee on Manufactures. The schemers well know, that Mr. Clay, of all the public men in this Union, is the least influenced by local and sectional feelings—that he is a statesman of enlarged and magnanimous views, and comprehends within the grasp of his capacious mind, the interests alike of the East and West, the North and South.—Anticipating his opposition to a relinquishment of the public lands, his enemies are prepared to take every advantage which they think will result from his new position. Should he report either against a cession to the several States, or against a reduction in price, the outcry will immediately be raised, that he is opposed to the Western interests. On the other hand, to advocate both or either of these propositions, will be certain to insure the hostility of a portion, perhaps a considerable portion, of the Atlantic country."

We shall see what will be the result of this scheme.
